The shift to work from home is an adjustment for everyone, and those who are completely new to working from home may take some time to adjust. Working from home has its perks such as longer sleeping hours and no commute time, but some are finding it hard to stay focused and efficient. There are days where you are distracted by your family members or a pile of laundry that suddenly looks more appealing, staying productive at home can take a little extra effort.
But you’ll make the most of it if you approach the day intentionally. Here are some tips for working from home while staying healthy and productive.
1. Find a designated work spot
It may be tempting to move around your house throughout the day to work trying to freshen your mindset. But you need to have a designated spot that allows you to get into work mode but also allow you to transition out off when you clock off. Once you have decided on your designated spot, get into the routine of working here daily. By establishing your routine, it will help provide familiar comfort as we manoeuvre our days of working from home.
As our home is pulling a double-duty, keeping your house organised and clutter-free can help you reduce a lot of stress. Try to put your work supplies into a storage area when your work comes to an end. You will appreciate the convenience as the week passes!
There’s no wrong space to work, and since it’s probably going to be pulling double-duty while our lives become homebound. Use a basket (or another form of storage) to put your work supplies into at day’s end.
2. Use some scents to kickstart your day
Having trouble focusing? Grab your essential oils and tap into their attention-honing power. Some invigorating scents you can try out are peppermint, lemon, tangerine, orange and tea tree. These essential oils are great to help mental focus, clarity, and memory. Not only so, but it is also a great way to keep you motivated and signal your creative brain it is time to work!
3. Separate your work and personal time
Our lines of work and rest can get a bit blurred know that we are working from home. Giving yourself time off is just as important to work when you say you will. Extending work hours beyond what you planned may cause a burnout!
By balancing your time properly, you can keep yourself productive while you are working and reduce stress when you aren’t. In the same way that you scheduled your work hours, schedule, communicate and plan when you will not be available to work. For example, if you like to take evenings to do some Yoga hold yourself to that commitment!
4. Have a schedule
Planning your day is essential to keep your productivity up! Before you start working, make sure you have come up with your to-do list for the day, what your priorities are, how long it takes for you to get things done.
For those who struggle to find sleep due to the stress of planning it in the back of your head, try planning your schedule out the next day before your workday ends. If you find that planning the day before keeps you awake, try making a plan for the day while you eat breakfast or exercise before work.
5. Practice Self-Care
In times of self-isolation, it’s easy to question the meaning of being productive and happy. The importance of self-care comes in at times like this. Some of us need to carve out some time each day for some exercise, others like to get into their skincare routine. Or maybe all you need is some meditation. Every one of us have different self-care methods, so do take the time to practice self-care.
But, this can be a challenge for many people. Especially when the boundaries of work and non-work boundaries are blurred. So even if this Work from Home setup may not be a long-term route for us all its important for us all to be better at taking care of ourselves as well as others through the means we have today.
6. Wear something nice
Many home workers will tell you about the importance of just getting dressed. Just because we can lounge around in our pyjamas, it doesn’t mean we should. A good idea could be to take a shower, get dressed and maybe even take a short walk before you set up in front of your computer for the day.
